I finally read (and watched) other works by Hanif Kureishi which I find much more interesting than what I've been reading so far : The Black Album (book) and My Son The Fanatic (movie, adaptated from one of his short stories). It's essentially about the same subjects : a young student coming from an sub-continental family living in England, muslim «but open-minded and well integrated», experiencing a great sense of bewilderment, lost betwen two worlds (the religious one, typically made up from young adults looking for their «roots» as a reaction to the racism they're subject to, and the liberal world made up by «white» english people with «loose morals», intellectuals and revolutionaries ranging from the drug dealers to the university professors). The book is more about the point of view of the son, whereas the movie is more about the father's point of view, watching his son turning from a «average» boy to a «fanatic». The son in the book ends up choosing the liberal world while the son in the movie goes definitely fanatic and leaves the house (as do the mother, leaving the father alone with his english girlfriend).
Though I'm not entirely convinced of both works, the characters are convincing, real-looking. The only bad critic I would make is about the plots themselves, which do not allow any space to the majority «in between» worlds, theses worlds where english people might be white but conservative on many things, where immigrants and their children might be both midly religious and liberal on many things, all these «in between» reflecting the negociation ground in the life of so many people who have not and don't want to choose either of the «absolute» worlds he describes (the totally liberal one and the fanatic one). It's as if these middle grounds don't exist in his fictions, when anyone's day to day experience shows that they concern the majority of people ...
But then I guess they were works of their times, following the Rushdie Episode and all this, and above all knowing that a plot evolving between fanatics and liberals is much more appealing to audiences. But that doesn't mean these work don't represent some realities (otherwise the characters wouldn't be convincing), it is just only showing a very small part of the reality ...

TerraFerma
... de Emanuele Crialese.
Another beautiful movie. Story : an italian island, rather poor, trying to convert from a fishing-based economy to a tourist activities-based one, and illegal african immigrants end up on the shore and the island last fisher’s boat, who saves 3 of them, obeying «the law of the sea» ( never live someone at sea ), in full contradiction to the official law «leave the clandestines to authorities, don’t pick them up ( even if they’re drowning ... ), and in any case, denounce them» . You see all the inhabitants’ reactions to the events, and you always wonder, as a european, safe at home, what horrors and misery could convince people to leave their country definitely, at so much risks ( death, mistreatment ... ).

A Separation
... By Asghar Farhadi.
Beautiful movie I saw last week (getting the Oscar, some cinemas in France decided to run it again for one week in the theatres), on which I could talk for hours. When you think it's just a story of an actual separation between a husband and a wife, you realize it goes deeper, and the separation is between everything and everyone ( between social classes inside Iran, etc ), a separation that every character miss on bridging to be in touch again ... Leading to the end, where the ones to pay the highest price are the kids symbolizing the next generation. Beautiful movie in that is also shows that the language, the cultural references and behaviors are but a thin sheet envelopping the same life : what the characters are living in the movie could be seen anywhere in the world, and maybe first of all here, in the "west".

For example, even the character of the poor and deeply religious woman, which we might think is not found that much elsewhere (and that would be a terrible mistake in itself) could be swapped by simply a deeply "secular-moral" character elsewhere, leading to the same acts that we see in the movie played through the specific iranian culture.
I was then so happy it got the Oscar, especially during these awful times where geo-politics are going nuts (and don't get me started on that, I'm not over the fact that Irak is destroyed, I think I'll go properly mad if the same happens again), I thought maybe it was a good occasion to go humanist and deflate the current crazyness, but as I read this, obviously, human stupidity is always strongest, as History has always shown ...

You are what your deep, driving desire is.
As your desire is, so is your will.
As your will is, so is your deed.
As your deed is, so is your destiny.
( Brihadaranyaka Upanishad IV, 4.5 )
( More or less quoted like this in the last movie I saw, The Iron Lady, good movie, Meryl Streep deserved the oscar - I liked it though I like the lady herself not, but it's interesting for the willpower shown of this woman, set to do the impossible, though, in my opinion, on the wrong side ... )

Dans la série ...

"Many of these young warriors did not even know the history of their own country or the story of the jihad against the Soviets. These boys were a world apart from the mujaheddin whom I had got to know during the 1980s - men who could recount their tribal and clan lineages, remembered their abandoned farms and valleys with nostalgia and recounted legends and stories from afghan history. These boys were from a generation who had never seen their country at peace - and Afghanistan not at war with invaders and itself. They had no memories of their tribes, their elders, their neighbours nor the complex ethnic mix of peoples that often made up their villages and their homeland. These boys were what the war had thrown up like the sea's sirrender on the beach of history.
They had no memories of the past, no plans for the future while the present was everything. (...) they admired war because it was the only occupation they could possibly adapt to."
(p.32, Taliban, Ahmed Rashid )
" - If I didn't take these pills, I'd commit mass murder on half the parents of this school and help the other half throw their kids through the window ... "
( excerpt as I remember it said by one of the teachers in Detachment, movie by Tony Kaye, with Adrien Brody ).
Though I use them a lot, the phrases "west", "first world", "third world", etc ... are totally misguiding. They tell us more of what we would like the world to be ( rich and peaceful and dominating the rest - in the First, the West, and well, the rest, the problems and the wars and misery in the rest of the world ), than what the world is like. And when you read this book, by Ahmed Rashid, and see this movie, you clearly see the inanity of these phrases : the misery, especially the mental misery, is everywhere as powerful and destroying. Kids in Afghanistan have nothing left to grow up, not even whole families where they could feel secure, let alone food and school and homes etc ... And in one of the richest countries in the world, you see lives of people, who even with food, schools and sort of homes, are totally lost and perturbed, with nothing to hang on to.
That's why I try, too, not to read or watch this sort of books and movies too often, because precisely I totally lack the necessary "detachment" so that I can live the rest of my day or week without being seriously saddened, if not depressed, by these stories, as far away from me as they seem to be.

Un autre titre en anglais (time out) ?!

I saw an interesting movie today of which we didn't hear much in France (well, not me at least), called "the help" and for some reason translated in french as "the colour of feelings" ... Story set up just before and during the civil rights movement in the US. Great movie, and it still astounds me thinking that racism and discrimination on that scale were (and are, in other ways) so common ... How can a mere human come up with so much crap ideas ? Same human who can also come up with such courage ... We are the strangest species of the planet.
Autres films vus :
