    Je viens de terminer ce livre (version originale), qui semble avoir eu un certain succès meme si je l'avais acheté un peu par hasard dans la librairie anglophone de Lyon (place Bellecour). Ce livre, divertissant, est une version améliorée, très bien écrite, de «desperate housewives», avec la mineure différence que le sujet n'est pas le voisinage (du moins pas en premier plan) mais une famille américaine «type» (du moins type citadine et éduquée). C'est le livre que les intellectuels et les bobos peuvent apprécier et en dire «j'ai adoré, c'est un parfait tableau de la société américaine moderne» quand ils n'oseraient jamais dire qu'il adorent regarder les Desperate housewives ... 

    Personnellement j'ai bien aimé les Desperate, et j'ai bien aimé ce bouqin. C'est pas du Victor Hugo, je ne pense pas que l'auteur aie ce but d'ailleurs, mais l'écriture, très bien faite et convaincante, nous accroche sur les 700 pages, et effectivement, on pourrait prendre ca pour une peinture intéressante d'un certain type de société de nos jours. L'auteur est doué pour décrire beaucoup de ces petites situations et ces petits sentiments que l'on connait sans connaître. Et comme toujours, on aime lire ce genre de livre parce qu'on aime toujours, secrètement ou pas, voir à quel point la vie des autres est complètement déglinguée, et qu'on apprend des choses par procuration ...  

     J'ai donc bien l'intention de lire les autres livres de cet auteur. 

     I just finished reading this novel, which seems to have got a relative popularity, though I bought it by happenstance in the bookshop, only because I liked the cover (the one with the title made of white little birds). I found it enjoyable, not the book of the century, but certainly a really good depiction of a certain society (let's say the life of city-dwelling eduquated americans) at the turn of this century. The writing is really good, descriptions are great, it's «Desperate Housewives» with more details, the author is very skilled in depicting all these little feelings, these little situations that everybody knows without being conscient of it, and very skilled at imagining the mental evolution of very different characters. 

    It's also the book that gives the possibility to the upper classes (and maybe more the middles wanting to be upper) to say they loved this depiction of the modern american society when they would not dare admit to anyone they love watching Desperate Housewives because of basically the same reasons (one of them being that the humans are a species that loves knowing what's going on in the f***ed-up lives of others). As for me, I totally admit having enjoyed this TV series, as much as this witty book in which I learned some things about a society as strange to me as any other ... 

    Then, looking forward to buy other books by him.
